Wie versprochen öffne ich euch heute meine Skizzenbücher. Ab 2011 begann ich regelmässig und systematisch mein Skizzenbuch zu benutzen.

Welche Funktion erfüllt das Skizzenbuch für mich?

Es ist, wie schon der Name sagt, der Ort, an dem ich meine Skizzen für Bilder und von Ideen festhalte. Manche der Zeichnungen werden zu Bildern, wie zum Beispiel die Schnecke. Andere bleiben Skizzen, wie die Libellen, die ich auf Sardinien gezeichnet habe.

As promised, I’m opening my sketchbooks to you today. From 2011 I started to use my sketchbook regularly and systematically.

What function does the sketchbook fulfil for me?

It is, as the name suggests, the place where I keep my sketches for pictures and ideas. Some of the drawings become pictures, like the snail, for example. Others remain sketches, like the dragonflies I drew in Sardinia.

Manchmal halte ich technische Überlegungen fest. In diesem Fall ging es um einen Rahmen, den ich schlussendlich niemals gebaut habe….

Sometimes I record technical considerations. In this case, it was about a frame that I ultimately never built…

Wie diese Farbstudie für eines der Kuhbilder. Hier hatte ich mir überlegt, die Kuh Falschfarben zu malen und habe über die Farbtemperatur dafür nachgedacht. Am Ende habe ich sie realistisch gemalt, da es mir am besten gefallen hat.

Like this color study for one of the cow pictures. Here I had thought about painting the cow in false colors and I thought about the color temperature for it. In the end I painted it realistically, because I liked it best.

Oft fertige ich Miniaturen des Bildes an, um zu sehen, ob Bildaufteilung und Farbwahl stimmen. Bei diesem Bild fand ich beides nicht ganz überzeugend, obwohl ich jetzt – mit ein paar Jahren Abstand – die Miniatur gar nicht so schlecht finde. Vielleicht mache ich da mal noch weiter.

Often I make thumbnails of the picture to see if the picture layout and color selection is correct. With this picture I found both not quite convincing, although now – a few years apart – I don’t think the thumbnail is so bad. Maybe I will continue there.

Hilfreich sind auch die sogenannten «Notan»-Skizzen, die nur die Dunkelheiten und Helligkeiten eines Bildes erfassen. Stimmen diese in der Skizze, kann man weitermachen. Hier war ich der Meinung, dass das Ergebnis nicht befriedigend war.

Also helpful are the so-called “Notan” sketches, which only capture the darkness and brightness of an image. If these are correct in the sketch, one can continue. Here I had the opinion that the result was not satisfying.

Was ich immer benötige, ist ein Übertragungsraster. Früher habe ich das mit diesen kleinen Rastern gemacht. Heute drucke ich mir meine Referenzfotos aus und lege das Raster direkt darüber.

What I always need is a transmission grid. I used to do it with these little grids. Today I print out my reference photos and put the grid directly over them.

Meine Skizzenbücher sind, nachdem ich mit ihnen fertig bin, meistens doppelt so dick wie am Anfang, da ich alle Fotos, Zettelchen, etc in das Buch hineinlege, wie hier mit der Vorlage für dieses Bild.

My sketchbooks, after I’m done with them, are usually twice as thick as in the beginning, because I put all photos, notes, etc. into the book, like here with the reference photo for this painting.

Und manchmal muss man sich einfach die Freiheit nehmen und ganz etwas anderes als das Gewohnte machen. Oft «doodle» ich einfach rum. Das hilft mir den Kopf für neue Ideen zu öffnen. Mittlerweile kann ich das auch ganz ohne Versagensängste, denn normalerweise sieht niemand das Ergebnis dieser Versuche.

And sometimes you simply have to take the liberty of doing something completely different from what you are used to. Often I just “doodle” around. That helps me to open my mind for new ideas. Meanwhile I can do this without fear of failure, because normally nobody sees the result of these attempts.

Meine Skizzenbücher sind auch immer meine künstlerischen Tagebücher. Ich schreibe viel in ihnen. Oft beziehen sich meine Einträge auf mein künstlerisches Schaffen, manchmal auch nicht….

My sketchbooks are also always my artistic diaries. I write a lot in them. Often my entries refer to my artistic work, sometimes not

Manchmal beschäftige ich mich auch mit theoretischen Aspekten der Malerei, z.b. mit dem Farbrad und Verläufen.

Sometimes I also deal with theoretical aspects of painting, e.g. with the colour wheel and gradients.

Ich habe in mir auch eine illustrative Seite, der ich aber nicht so recht über den Weg traue. Hier eine der Illustrationen zur Serie «Paare». Und was ich extrem gerne mache, ist skizzieren in Restaurants. Dabei muss man sehr schnell umsetzen, was man sieht, da man ja die Menschen schlecht bitten kann, 10 Minuten in der gleichen Pose zu bleiben (manche machen das von sich aus…).

I also have an illustrative side in me, but I don’t really trust it. Here is one of the illustrations of the series “Couples”. And what I really like to do is sketching in restaurants. You have to realize very quickly what you see, because it’s hard to ask people to stay in the same pose for 10 minutes (some people do that on their own…).

Und manchmal klebe ich Dinge in mein Skizzenbuch, die ich einfach nicht vergessen möchte. Hier ist es dass Packpapier mit meinen vom ersten Päckchen mit Unisonkreiden aus England.

And sometimes I put things in my sketchbook that I just don’t want to forget. Here it is the wrapping paper with the first pack of unison pastels from England.

Und selbstverständlich landen auch sämtliche Einladungskarten zu Ausstellungen, an denen ich teilgenommen habe im Skizzenbuch.

Ich liebe meine Skizzenbücher. Es ist wunderbar nach Jahren die alten Sachen anzuschauen und ich liebe es zu skizzieren. Ich kann euch nur empfehlen ebenfalls ein Skizzenbuch zu führen. Macht Spass!

I love my sketchbooks. It is wonderful after years to look at the old things and I love to sketch. I can only recommend you to keep a sketchbook as well. It’s fun!
