As a hyperrealsitic painter, one encounters a recurring question: “Is this a photograph or one of your paintings?” Not to mention that it’s usually one of my paintings, this question just raises another one. Namely: why do I paint it at all, when you could just as well “only” photograph it? Yes, exactly: why?Because it’s not like I just paint a photo and that’s it. My paintings are often composed of many photos. So I build the “reality” the way I want to have it. Furthermore I arrange all things on my reference photos the way I want them to be. So if you would take a photo with the same things, you would surely get a completely different picture. So the “reality” of my photo is already determined by my perception. That’s why I make a point of taking all reference photos myself.

Als hyperrealsitischer Maler begegnet man einer wiederkehrenden Frage: «Ist das ein Foto oder eines deiner Bilder?» Mal ganz abgesehen davon, dass es meistens eines meines Bilder ist, wirft diese Frage gerade eine weitere auf. Nämlich: warum male ich es überhaupt, wenn man es genau so gut «nur» fotografieren könnte? Ja genau: warum?
Weil es nicht so ist, dass ich einfach ein Foto abmale und gut. Meine Bilder sind oft aus vielen Fotos zusammengesetzt. Ich baue mir die «Realität» also so wie ich sie haben möchte. Ausserdem arrangiere ich alle Dinge auf meinen Referenzfotos so, wie ich sie haben will. Wenn du also ein Foto mit den gleichen Dingen machen würdest, dann würde mit Sicherheit ein ganz anderes Bild dabei rauskommen. So ist schon die «Realität» meines Fotos von meiner Wahrnehmung bestimmt. Darum lege ich auch so Wert darauf, alle Referenzfotos selber zu machen.
