Day 13
Recently a friend of mine asked me what would be the worst mistake you could make when you start a painting. Spontaneously, I wanted to say that there can be no mistakes at all, because you learn from every attempt, but after a little while, it occurred to me that there are definitely mistakes that can be avoided.
In the heat of the moment, one often takes too little time to look at the sketches or reference photographs and determine whether they actually work as a whole composition. If a picture already looks funny in the sketch, it doesn’t get better with color.
What often happened to me in the beginning was that I only concentrated on the object of my interest. The concept for the background was “let’s see!”. Unfortunately, this rarely works. Most of the time you can see in the painting that the painter has lost the thread somewhere between foreground and background.
And sometimes a picture composition works as a photo but not as a painting. A tacky sunset is at least real in a photo, as a painting it’s just a cliché.

Vor kurzem fragte mich eine Freundin, was der schlimmste Fehler sei, den man machen könne, wenn man ein Bild anfange. Spontan wollte ich sagen, dass es gar keine Fehler geben könne, da man aus jedem Versuch lerne, aber nach ein wenig Nachdenken, ging mir auf, dass es durchaus Fehler gibt, die vermeidbar sind.
Im Eifer des Gefechts nimmt man sich oft zu wenig Zeit, um die Skizzen oder Referenzfotos zu betrachten und festzustellen, ob sie tatsächlich als gesamte Komposition funktionieren. Wenn ein Bild in der Skizze schon komisch aussieht, wird es mit Farbe auch nicht besser.
Was mir anfangs oft passiert ist, war, dass ich mich nur auf den Gegenstand meines Interesses konzentrierte. Das Konzept für den Hintergrund war «sehen wir dann!». Leider funktioniert das in den seltensten Fällen. Meistens sieht man dem Bild an, dass der Maler irgendwo zwischen Vorder- und Hintergrund den Faden verloren hat.
Und manchmal funktioniert eine Bildkomposition als Foto aber nicht als gemaltes Bild. Ein kitschiger Sonnenuntergang ist auf einem Foto wenigstens echt, als Gemälde ist er einfach nur Klischee.
